In Another Land, Long Ago

IN ANOTHER LAND, LONG AGO.

Today a well groomed elderly gentleman came into the store. Said he wanted an AR. After I cleared one and as I handed it over he said,

"It's been 44 years since I held one of these...."

He took the rifle from me, expertly cleared it, and let out a long sigh before remarking to no one in particular,

"It feels heavier than before."

His wife who had been standing slightly behind and to his right, leaned in and gently reminded him,

"You were younger then, Dear."

At this, the years loosen their grip and he stood ramrod straight. Instantly as if responding to a freshly barked command, "Present arms!" he crisply raised the rifle vertically before him and smartly pushed it to me.

"I'll take it and two boxes of 556,"

I thanked him for the purchase and then for his service.

I didn't ask and he didn't say but it was easy to see that after 44 years the Colt stirred old memories. From his bearing I'd surmise he'd have rather not been troubled by the memories

2012 minus 44 years puts a young solider and his Colt M16 smack in the middle of Vietnam.

My thanks to him and all who served before and after him. You are not forgotten!

Thank you.
