Keep Guns Out of the Wrong Hands

Keep Guns Out of the Wrong Hands

An Unfortunate Incident

This evening (10/22/15) we had an unfortunate incident wherein we had to cancel a gun sale when the wife of a man in the process of completing a the purchase gave us reason to believe she had no business owning a firearm or being in the same house with one.

Indeed even after passing his criminal background check, we refused to complete the sale of the pistol to the man because his wife flew into a rage when we would not agree that "in a perfect world only law enforcement and the government should be allowed to have firearms."

After listening to her speak our store manager suspected she might be unstable. So, he called me over to help evaluate her. As we spoke about her anti-2nd Amendment views, she grew more and more agitated. Before long she was yelling and cursing.

Canceled the Sale

At this point as a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer, we had no choice but to refuse to process the sale of the firearm to her husband. We simply cannot and will not put others in harm's way by setting someone up with access to a firearm who appears unstable.

Naturally under the circumstances we asked that she not to return to our store. This is not the first time we have had to cancel a gun sale and invite someone to leave the store and it won't be the last.

Gun Dealers Do the Right Thing

So when you hear others say that firearms dealers will "sell guns to anyone," set them straight by showing them this post.
Frontier Firearms will not and does not sell firearms to people who are appear imbalanced and / or who may be a potential danger to themselves and / or others.

New Business Began After Gun Shop Offers Christians a Discount

"I am Christian and I Carry"

On October 1, 2015 Within hours of the tragic massacre on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Oregon where Christians were targeted, President Barrack Obama appear in a televised speech announcing he would be politicizing these horrific, execution style murders. In the speech the President renewed his call for the passage of more gun laws, but Obama made no mention that Christians had been executed for their faith.

Brant Williams the owner of Frontier Firearms was deeply affected both by the shooting and the President's speech.  Williams states that, "the next day I could not stop think about the shooting. I kept thinking 'enough is enough'. America is turning its back on Christians.

The gun store and shooting range owner went on to say, "Christianity can't be mentioned in any government functions and is banned from our schools and places of employment. Even at Christmas for fear of offending, many businesses no longer mention Jesus Christ. I have even read about folk protesting because they didn't want the baby Jesus in a Christmas play!"

Williams says this is when he read that Tennessee Lt Governor Ron Ramsay had bravely taken a stand against the slaughter of unarmed people and Christians. In a Facebook post Ramsey wrote:
"While this is not the time for widespread panic, it is a time to prepare.... I would encourage my fellow Christians who are serious about their faith to think about getting a handgun carry permit. I have always believed that it is better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it....Our enemies are armed. We must do likewise." The Tennessean
"I thought, Lt. Gov. Ramsey is right!' says Williams.  Indeed, "Christians should be prepared by carrying a handgun."

As the owner of Frontier Firearms, Williams decided he should act.  "I could help. This is when I decided to offer a discount to Christians."

When asked why he wanted to give Christians a discount, Williams said he had three goals.  "To let Christians know that despite the growing opposition and hostility to Christianity around in the USA and around the world in my store they are respected and welcome, to help Christians obtain a firearm, and to give Christians an opportunity to openly profess their faith and receive a small reward rather than a bullet in the head."

This is the ad Williams posted on Facebook.

Shortly after posting the ad a local television station, WVLT Channel 8 in Knoxville,TN ran a story on the discount. Within 24 hours the story had gone national.

See the story here: Local 8 WVLT TV Gun store offering discount for Christians

That's when according to Williams "the storm began and our Facebook page blew up."  Williams says that while supportive was strong, many people were upset.  "Even after I assured them no one would be denied a discount during the sale, some folks were threatening lawsuits for discrimination."

Williams reports that he engaged those who were objecting and discovered they fell into the following groups:
  1. Liberals and progressive who hate firearms
  2. Liberals, progressives and atheists who seem to hate Christianity if not Christians
  3. Atheists who love guns but hate Christianity.
  4. Christians who hate guns.
  5. Christians who do not hate guns but misunderstand scripture (especially Matthew 5:9 "turn the other cheek" and / or the commandment "thou shall not kill (murder) Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17)
However despite those who "threatened lawsuits in a obvious attempt to use the brute force of the government to silence him," Williams was receiving calls from folk all around the country who were supportive and said more Christians should stand up and be heard.

"That's when I had the idea for a tasteful pin Christians could wear that told other Christians were they stood."

Williams states that he designed the pin to allow Christians to "announce their faith and their commitment to self-defense".

A picture of the new "I am Christian and I Carry" pin is below.

Tennessee Gun Shop Offers Discount To Christians - Frontier Firearms

"I am Christian and I Carry"

Luke 22:35-37 And He said to them, "When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?" So they said, Nothing."  Then He said to them, "But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: 'And He was numbered with the transgressors.' For the things concerning Me have an end."

Christians Targeted

On October 1, 2015 a tragic massacre was perpetrated on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Victims were asked to identify their faith.  Those who said they were Christian were summarily executed with a bullet to the head. Those who did not profess faith in Jesus Christ were shot in the lower extremities.  Before the smoke cleared nine innocent folk had been shot died (not all who died were Christian) and nine more wounded.  As usual in these mass shootings, the cowardly assassin took his own life as soon as he met an armed response.

Mathew Downing who was spared by the shooter recalls the most chilling scene:
"The shooter asked one of the other students to stand up and when he did, asked him if he was religious. The student said he was Christian and was shot.  This continued with another person, who acknowledged he was Catholic, but wasn't sure if he believed in an afterlife. He was shot too." CNN News

The President Speaks

As facts came in the nation seemed to hold its breath until, even before the dead were identified, President Barrack Obama appear in a televised speech announcing he would be politicizing these horrific, execution style murders. The President renewed his call for the passage of more gun laws.
The President made no mention that Christians had been executed for their faith.

Enough is Enough

The next day I could not stop think about the shooting. I kept thinking "enough is enough". America is turning its back on Christians. Christianity can't be mentioned in any government functions and is banned from our schools and places of employment. Even at Christmas for fear of offending, many businesses no longer mention Jesus Christ. I have even read about folk protesting because they didn't want the baby Jesus in a Christmas play!
Now Christians are being singled out for execution (also see the Charleston Church Shootings. NBC NEW Charleston Church Shooting

A Brave Stand

This is when I read that Tennessee Lt Governor Ron Ramsay had bravely taken a stand against the slaughter of unarmed people and Christians.:
"While this is not the time for widespread panic, it is a time to prepare.... I would encourage my fellow Christians who are serious about their faith to think about getting a handgun carry permit. I have always believed that it is better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it....Our enemies are armed. We must do likewise." The Tennessean

We Should Be Prepared

Nehemiah 4:14  ...fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
I thought, Lt. Gov. Ramsey is right!  Christians should be prepared by carrying a handgun and as the owner of Frontier Firearms, I could help. This is when I decided to offer a discount to Christian in order to achieve these goals:
  1. Let Christians know that despite the growing opposition and hostility to Christianity around in the USA and around the world in my store they are respected and welcome,
  2. Help Christians obtain a firearm.
  3. Give Christians an opportunity to openly profess their faith and receive a small reward rather than a bullet in the head.

Facebook Ad

So I posted the ad you see here on Facebook.
Almost immediately countless Christians posted expressions of support.

A Storm Blows In

Then a local television station, WVLT Channel 8, Knoxville TN came to my gun store and filmed a story. Within 24 hours the story had gone national. See the story here: Local 8 WVLT TV Gun store offering discount for Christians
That's when the storm began and our Facebook page blew up. On one side folk were supportive but on the other side people were going nuts. Many, even after I assured them no one would be denied a discount during the sale, were threatening lawsuits for discrimination. Christians and atheists alike quoted out-of-context Bible verses to condemn me for suggesting Christians should even own much less and carry a handgun.

Many Claimed Offense

I engaged many of the folks who were objecting and discovered they fell into the following groups:

Yet Support Was Great

I was receiving calls from all around the country from folks who were supportive and said more Christians should stand up and be heard.

SELF-DEFENSE IS BIBLICAL

Believers should be conscious that personal self-defense is legitimatized by the Scriptures, just as the use of construction tools, cooking tools, transportation tools are legitimized by Scripture. And these matters of self-defense should hold in our minds and in our affections the same position as those other legitimate, but transitory, matters.
Though heavenly beings do battle and render judgments with the sword, in the perfection pictured in both the garden of Eden and in the Heavenly city, the primary activities are fellowship with God, fellowship with His people, singing in worship, and living in peace.
That is our destination.  ~ MT Biblical Self-defense

Brave New World: It's Not Safe

Our world has changed - BE ALERT

Watch for Frontier Firearms' new course on self-defense mindset

Caught off guard, and shot dead.

No matter where you live, where you're, or what you're doing you are at risk.

You are not safe:

At Home
Shopping
At the office
Getting gasoline
Enjoying a movie
Working outdoors

Regardless of the time or place, there are crazies, druggies, criminals and terrorists who want to hurt you or kill you.  So you cannot afford to oblivious to your surroundings.  You must pay attention to the people around you.

Be alert to your surroundings

Joe Chamblin, USMC Scout Sniper Instructor retired, author of Into Infamy, A Marine Sniper's War and tactics trainer at Frontier Firearms Family Shooting Center in Kingston TN shared this, “For most, awareness of one's surroundings is not innate behavior.  It takes training and practice to learn to be conscious of your surroundings."

How does one train and practice to be more aware?

Chamblin relates his own experience. "At first it seems easy. You think all you have to do is look around but there's more to it than simply keeping your head up and eyes open, but there's a lot more to it than that. The trick and the hard part is making awareness of your surroundings second nature and to learn to spot potential threats."
There are many things one can do to reduce the risk of becoming someone's victim. When walking into a room, quickly scan around before sitting down. Pay attention to who is nearby and attempt to assess any threat they may pose. Always look for hard cover, places that could shield you from gun fire and exits.
When walking down a sidewalk stay to the inside near the buildings so you have less area to scan for danger.  Glance in windows as you walk to see who may be walking behind you.  Be observant of the people around you. Simple awareness of the people nearby gives you a serious edge over being oblivious of your surroundings.

“Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”

~ Gen. James Mattis

Take a class in self-defense mindset

Chamblin also suggests stepping up your awareness training through more specific observation. For instance, he suggests taking note of who may be armed or is acting out of the ordinary.  Then mentally play what if scenarios. "What if that guy pulled a gun?  What if those kids attacked me?  What if a robber came in? What if someone busted-in my front door?"  Develop mental plans and play them out in your head.  To illustrate his point, Chamblin likes to quote this generations most revered Marine, Gen. James "Mad Dog" Mattis, "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”
Everyone should consider taking a class in situational awareness and self-defense mindset. According to Brant Williams, founder of Frontier Firearms, "with the growing number of deadly shootings and random attacks it became obvious we needed a course specifically designed to teach civilians situational awareness and to have a mindset that allows them to react before becoming victims."
Williams explains why he recently tapped Chamblin to develop a course for civilian men and women on the basics of the self-defense mindset including how to decrease the chances of becoming a victim and how to react appropriately to any threat.   "I wanted a real-world 'X-Rated' course taught by a man who had been - there done that, a man who understands the stakes, a man whose job it was to keep his men and himself safe and who knows what it's like to fight for one's life - up close and personal.  Chamblin fits that bill," related Williams.

New course in self-defense mindset to be announced

Carry for Life© - Situational Awareness and the Self-Defense Mindset

Frontier Firearms will be announcing the new course, dates and time very soon. In the meantime, take time to train yourself to become more aware of your surroundings. Pay more attention to what is happening near by, your life depends on it.

CONCEALED CARRY LESSONS: Unarmed Man Disarms Legally Armed Man

Carrying A Handgun Can Be Dangerous.  Are You Prepared?

A.T.M. = Awareness - Training - Mindset

More and more of us have taken our concealed carry classes and decided to legally carry a handgun for self-defense. As a result the odds of seeing someone in public with a gun or you being spotted with a gun are high.  Are you prepared for this reality of concealed carry?

Beyond the debate about open carry, one must consider the ramifications of concealed carry and the good possibility another citizen will see your firearm in public.  While in many states it is legal to carry open and it is legal for your concealed carry gun to "flash" (become temporarily visible) or remain partially visible at all times, one must be aware of the problems that arise when others see your self-defense weapon.

We all know about citizens calling the police whenever they spot others exercising their open carry right, but what about cases were the sharp eyed citizen takes matters into their own hands.  What about times when a citizen is legally carrying concealed and is attacked because his or her gun was spotted?

In such cases, we cannot assume others will think of us as a good guy with a gun. In the video below we see Florence Daniels (green shirt) entering a Florida Walmart with his concealed carry gun on his right hip concealed beneath his shirt.  At the time Daniels did not know that when he got out of his car Michael Foster (black shirt) saw him holster his handgun and tuck it under his shirt.

Foster followed Daniels into the Walmart and tackled him while yelling, "He's got gun!"  As you see in the video several bystanders entered the fray to help disarm Daniels, who was shouting, "I have a permit!  I have a permit!"

[Before proceeding it should be noted that Foster was arrested and charge with assault.]

The video tells us a great deal and gives us much to think about as we carry our guns for self defense or when we see others carrying their handguns in public.

Is everyone you see with a gun in public a bad guy?

Conversely are folks carrying guns in public always good guys with guns?

How do you tell and what do you do?  How much worse could this situation have been had Foster also been armed and had drawn his own gun on Daniels? Instead of a wrestling match, a shootout could have occurred .

What about the fact that in a matter of seconds an unarmed man took-down and disarmed a concealed carry permit holder.  At Frontier Firearms in Kingston, Tennessee thousands of people have taken the Handgun Carry Permit Class but aren't really prepared for the reality of day to day carry.  Frontier Firearms owner explains, "We see far too many people who believe carrying a firearm will make them invincible.  This simple is not the case."

AWARENESS - If you are going to carry a gun, you must:
  • Always take steps to ensure no one sees your handgun or that you are armed.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings - what is in front, to the side, and behind you.
  • Always be apprehensive and aware that simply carrying a firearm does not make you safe from attack and certainly does not make you invincible.
What if the unarmed attacker, Foster had had a knife and wanted to kill Daniels instead of disarming him.  In all likelihood Daniels would be dead. Daniels had not trained himself to fend off an attacker long enough to engage him.

TRAINING - If you are going to carry a gun, you must:
  • Learn how to carry without the casual observer seeing that you are armed
  • Learn how to fend off an attacker long enough to deploy your own weapon
  • Learn how to protect your weapon so an attacker cannot easily disarm you.
  • Learn how to deploy your backup weapon(s) while protecting your primary.

What did Daniels do when he was attacked?  He heard Foster yell, "He's got a gun!" and began shouting back, "I've got a permit!"  Did Daniels protests stop Foster from disarming him? No!  One must always be prepared to meet any attack head-on with force, with deadly force if necessary.  With the correct mindset, Daniels could have fought back as if his life depended on it.

MINDSET -  Be ready to fight for your life:
  • Teach yourself to flip the switch, to go from peace to battle mode the moment you are attacked.
  • Understand that when you are carrying a firearm any attack is a gunfight and should be fought as if it is to the death
  • Be willing do what ever it takes to protect your life, the life your loved ones and your firearm.
In this video we see that Daniels simply was not prepared for an attack.  He had no plan and no back up plan or weapons.  Anytime someone goes for your gun it is a matter of life and death but Daniels did not fight back as if his life were at stake.

Watch this clip and think about what you would do if you were Daniels the legal concealed carry permit holder or if you were Foster.

Is An Ankle Holster Right for You

Desantis Apache Concealed Carry Ankle Holster - Sold at Frontier Firearms

With concealed carry now legal in all 50 states, more and more folk are looking for ways to carry a handgun.  With so many options for carry is an ankle holster an option for you?

In the video below, Sig Sauer Academy Director Adam Painchaud talks about the ankle holster. According to Painchaud there are pros and cons to this style holster.

"Ankle holster are very concealable," says Painchaud.  When wearing a shirt tucked in and one doesn't want to wear a vest or jacket, the ankle holster is great, "They are very concealable."

A negative about ankle holsters is that it takes a bit of work getting to your firearm. Like all methods of carry it takes practice, and  with an ankle holster you should really make the effort to practice drawing your handgun from different positions.  The ankle holster excels when you are sitting down or driving.  In these situations, the ankle holster often provides easier access to your concealed carry weapon that belt carry doesn't afford.

Another issue with ankle holsters is that the size of the handgun you can reasonable conceal is limited mainly to micros and sub-compacts. According to Painchaud ankle holster just don't work well with medium and full size carry guns.

Most people find that for best access it is best to wear the ankle holster on the inside of the non-dominant ankle. That means a right person will wear the ankle holster "on the inside of my left leg," states Painchaud.

When standing Painchaud does not recommend dropping to one knee in order to draw from the ankle hostler.  Instead he likes to remain mobile by lifting his leg by bending at the knee to draw.

Painchaud also warns that firearms carried in an ankle holster tend to gather more dust and dirt and should be cleaned regularly as a result it's good the check and clean you firearm regularly.

Another word of advice is to not go cheap. It's important to get a good ankle holster. "I prefer neoprene," says Painchaud.

In the end how you carry is a personal decision but as we see in this video, an ankle holster is a great choice for everyday carry of your back-up, small revolver or pistol.   Also there are times when one just cannot carry any other way than an ankle holster.  For those times when the alternative is not carrying the ankle holster is the way to carry.  When summing up the ankle holster as an option to carry when other methods just won't work, "I would rather have something than nothing," Painchaud says.

Increased Gun Sales Driven by Women and Seniors

"Gun sales on the increase" says Brant Williams, president of Frontier Firearms in Kingston, TN
Frontier Firearms President Brant Williams

Gun sales are again increasing as folk feel a need to take greater responsibility for their personal protection.

Gun shop and range owner Brant Williams says his business has seen a recent increase in new firearms buyers.

"With the recent terrorist attack only 98 miles away in Chattanooga, TN (more...folks have felt uneasy that terrorism has hit so close to home. As a result people are rethinking their notions about self-protection."

Williams explains that more senior citizens and women are buying firearms and taking training courses.  "This has been going on for some time... more and more older folk and women are buying guns and taking the class for their Handgun Carry Permit class (more...).  They tell us that the world has changed and they no longer feel safe in their own homes on when out and about around town."  (more)

Frontier Firearms has a large selection of handguns for personal and home defense.  They offer firearms training classes on a regular schedule.   For more information call 865-376-0793 or visit their website at www.frontierfirearms.us

Frontier Assists Private Gun Sellers

We are in the news...

News outlets picked up on our desire to help private sellers transfer their firearms in the safest way possible (story links at page bottom).  Now private sellers can meet with their buyers at Frontier Firearms to sell their gun,  Frontier will log the firearm and run a background check on your buyer for only the state background check fee of $10.

Depending on how busy we are in the store, the process can take a just few minutes but goes a long way in making sure the gun you sell doesn't end up in the hands of a prohibited person.

Under current law as a private individual you cannot sell your gun when you know or have "reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law."

A prohibited person is someone who cannot receive or possess a firearm under Federal law. Prohibited persons are:
  • people out of state
  • anyone under the age of 18
  • convicted felons,
  • domestic abusers,
  • people who fugitives from the law
  • those with orders of protection against them
  • those who have been convicted of violent or gun-related misdemeanors,
  • those with a history of abusing alcohol or drugs,
  • those convicted of juvenile offenses, and
  • people with specific kinds of mental health histories

Keep Guns Out of the Wrong Hands

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                Eric Parish: (865)376-0793
Keep Guns Out of the Wrong Hands
Know that your buyer is allowed to own a firearm. Free Gun Transfers at Frontier Firearms
Kingston, TN July 28, 2015
“With the growing number of mass shootings, private gun sales are coming under greater scrutiny” says Brant Williams, President of Frontier Firearms in Kingston, TN.  “As a result, it is more important than ever for individuals selling a firearm to know if the buyer is legal to own a gun”
In order to help private gun sellers avoid running afoul of laws restricting who may legally be sold a gun, Frontier Firearms will waive their normal fee and perform gun transfers at no charge for individuals selling their firearm (there is a $10 Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, TBI, fee for running a background check on the buyer).
“There is growing sentiment that private sellers should do more to ensure guns don’t fall in the hands of the wrong people. Both in Congress and out there are calls for new laws that will hold private gun sellers more accountable when they sell to a person who is prohibited from owing a firearm. As is the problem now without running a background check, a private seller has no way of knowing if the buyer person is legal or not,” states Williams.
“That’s why Frontier Firearms decided to conduct gun private gun transfers for free. We want to help sellers make certain their guns remain in responsible hands,” Williams continued.
Williams says the process is simple and takes only a few minutes.  The buyer and the seller along with the firearm being sold go to Frontier Firearms. Frontier then makes sure the gun transfer meets the strictest standards of Federal and State laws. The firearm is recorded into Frontier’s Acquisition and Disposition Book and the buyer undergoes a TBI Instant Check or background check. Afterwards the seller may rest easy knowing the gun they just sold went to a person legal to own a firearm.
Background
Currently a private individual may sell their firearm to whomever they wish so long as the buyer meets certain criteria. Federal law now reads:
"A person may sell a firearm to an unlicensed resident of his State, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law. A person may loan or rent a firearm to a resident of any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes, if he does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law."
[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(d), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30]
The key is that the seller "does not know or have reasonable cause to believe the person [buyer] is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms under Federal law.
There are many Federal and State restrictions on sales, trades, gifts or other transfers of firearms:
·        It is against the law for anyone to transfer a firearm or ammunition to anyone known or believed to be prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
·        It is against the law (with rare exceptions) for anyone to transfer a handgun, rifle or shotgun or to a non-dealer who resides in another state.
