Other than the entertainment (jokes, tall tales, and "war stories") performed by the instructor and the quality of the facilities, Tennessee handgun carry permit classes should be identical.
In fact State Law says all handgun carry permit classes must be the same. They must be the same length (eight hours) cover the same material, show the same videos, use the same tests, and shoot the same qualifying course.
So why are some instructors charging so much money for their classes?
Greed, plan and simple -- greed. There is no other reason.
That said there are ways to find the right class at the right price. Here are a few things to look for when selecting a training academy to take your class:
Is the instructor full time - in other words are they dedicated to the students or are they just trying to make a fast buck on the side?
Does the instructor have an actual school with large, clean, well lighted classrooms?
Are there clean, modern restrooms easily available?
Is there a spacious, comfortable lounge area for breaks?
Are snacks and soda pop machines available
Is the range at the same place the classroom is at? Or do you have to drive to the range?
Is the range indoors so you don't have to worry about weather?
Will your class have exclusive use of the range or will you have to share it with others who are not under your instructors control?
(For some) Is the range 100% handicap accessible?
Is practice range time included in the price of the class?
Are loaner firearms readily available in case yours breaks during the class?
Are additional Range Safety Officers always on duty to give the instructor a hand or offer a bit of coaching when needed?
Is the range safe - of modern design, well lighted, and with good ventilation (airborne lead is very dangerous)?
Is there ample paved parking?
Are classes held frequently in case you must reschedule?
